Week Two EOC: Boston Consulting Group - Video Games

The iPad is a Star mark on the Boston Consulting Group. It is entirely ruling the world of gaming and new technology. Not all are huge fans of Apple products, but even they cannot deny that Apple’s new iPad and iPhone identities are up and coming in our lives and pushing each prior technology to compete. “Apple’s iPad sales reached more than 13.6 million units in the first quarter of 2012, for 162 percent year-over-year growth.” http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/iPad-Growth-Drives-Apple-to-Top-Mobile-PC-Share-NPD-804425/

“Nintendo faces growing competition from games played online and on smartphones from companies including Apple Inc., which will begin selling the iPhone 5 next week… Iwata has ruled out the possibility of making Nintendo’s characters available for gaming devices other than its own.” http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20120915/business/709159962/ Nintendo’s Wii hits its mark in the Dog sector of the Boston Consulting Group; with a low market growth rate as well as a low relative market share.  However, if perhaps the Wii came out with an updated version that attracted not ONLY bored children but fans of all ages, perhaps they could become a Cash Cow if not a Star.  Along with Wii follows PC and PsP resources in the Dog Box.

The Xbox system may as well be thrown into the Dog Box without the add-on of Kinect. With Kinect Xbox has spun a full ‘360.’ "Microsoft has announced that in the first four months of 2011 the Xbox 360 has enjoyed year-on-year unit sales growth of 39 per cent in the US - that's tripple the growth seen by PS3 in the same period."  http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-360-tripling-ps3-growth-in-2011/03493  However, WITH the add-on of Kinect, Xbox 360 and the PS3 can be safely placed in the Cash Cow box.  They may be low on market growth rates but they have a relatively high market share, which lands them solidly in the Cash Cow portion of this Boston Consulting Group.

Now, the question remains: where are the android apps and tablets and Kindle products?! Now THERE’S a score for the Question Mark category! With a Low market share and a High growth rate, the systems full of apps and androids are safely settled into questioning for the time being. As we already know, “the Android Market surpassed the 400,000 app mark in December 2011, doubling in the Market total in just 8 months.” http://columnfivemedia.com/work-items/lookout-infographic-smartphone-and-app-growth-soars/
